Animal Agriculture in Developing Countries - New Delhi Random Publications 2016 - 294

The intensification of farm animal production in industrialized agricultural system,or factory farms, compromises animal welfare and degrades the environment .Animal agriculture inefficiently consumes natural resources, contributes to deforestation, and produces immense quantities of animal waste, threatening water and air quality and contributing to climate change.Terms like "Factory Farming" are often used to describe modern animal agriculture.Unfortunately, this terminology seems to de-humanize the practice of raising livestock and poultry, which is not at all true.Farm sizes have gotten bigger for all livestock species and poultry. This is simply is a result of efficiencies of size and the public demand for low-cost meat, milk and eggs in the supermarket.we often hear about the loss of the family farm ,which in many cases, simply is not true;that family farm has just gotten a lot bigger. This is the same whether we are talking about livestock production or crop production.Agricultural producers are under constantpressure to minimize the impact their management practices have on the environment. Although most environmental concern related to animal agriculture have focused on water quality during the past two decades, air quality issues have become an increasing concern.Odors have been the main air quality concern related to agricultural animal production. However, ammonia emission from livestock and poultry operations have recently received significant attention. The book will suit to the needs of students, teachers, scholars and general readers.
